Hosabelaku - Living life @ lights' speed, Chandan

The prelude:

It was a long time that the creative cells of my brain had worked and they had already made my life hell by creating an itch.
Imagine how you would feel about an itch which is inside your head which u cannot scratch or kill.
More often than not its my old friend bootha(PD Satish Chandra) who does the act of “bhootha bidsing” for me and this time it wasn’t different.
I would have told him to do something and give me work more number of times than I have told “I love you” J
Such was the itch and the first hope was when KHKS happened in my life. I was waiting for clock to strike bootha’s head so I can have some work.

One fine day I get a call/message (don’t remember) asking if I was ready to meet on a Saturday evening to discuss some ventures. I thought time has come to get rid of my problems and I said yes a 1000 times in my mind but managed to send only one as a reply to the message. I landed up at KHKS where we had PD Satish, Ambarish(the ray of hosabelaku which opted out and never shined) and a couple of other people. As we got together for the discussion Satish revealed his plans of Hosabelaku and explained what the next set of actions were.

For most part of the next couple of weeks it was getting in touch with Director Bhagwan to get the rights and till then we hadn’t moved the needle much. Once we got the approval from him we again met to decide the timelines of the activities and the decision was to get the first play out for Kannada Rajyothsava. By then some of our old horses Daya, Ashwin, were all roped in and we decided to go with the auditions to build a new team. The activities and promotions started on FB and through various other forms. At this stage the idea was into action and I was beginning to like the whole experience.

The Auditions:

Even though we intended to have a good crowd in for our auditions we had never thought our efforts would work so well. The number of people and serious ones at that we saw for our auditions reconfirmed that what I was doing was indeed a dream for many. We had some excellent talent showcased in front of us and the choice making was another tough phase. Eventhough there were many favorites for a lot of us the boss Mr Satish had his own cast in mind and all we could do was argue but still agree. The night spent at in my house was worth it at the end of it all and we had the final cast in place. We also had finalized the crew list and we had reached a stage where our project was about to begin. The next few days we called up people to welcome them to fourth corner and to their different experience in theater under our director.

The Rehearsals

By the time people could appreciate that our director was ok with lines giving out the meaning and not the words and also the fact that they could do their own movements on stage, the tempered and hard hitting director was all over the faces of people. Swearing became a regular thingie and yet was kept only in the rehearsal times. I should say this team was the most gelling one who take all the beatings and yet stayed on. I cant forget the emotions that were flying around during these times and actors and production guys running for cover. But at this point I thought what if there was no force and if all things were done like in a corporate function. It would be the same old boring stuff and so the swearing shouting one sided arguments all made sense to me.

The shows

For a change I wasn’t tensed myself this time and I made life hell for a few due to that. Partha who took on the backstage activities made me relax to a large extent unlike some of the previous plays where I was running around for these things. So I made the most of it in giving him lots a trouble in the first show. The first set of shows were a test for all of us and I enjoyed them thoroughly. These were the shows which made all of us realize that we are team and we are working for each other.

The 4th show was another big challenge for us and as it is always said no game is over till it is over, the comfort from the success of the first 3 shows that was supposed to be in our mind was washed away due to some of the developments. The fourth show proved it to all of us that a team would only fade away if it wishes to and we decided otherwise. Thanks to all involved in keeping the hosabelaku coming.

The most active 6-8 weeks of my life in the past few years will surely be attributed to Hosabelaku. Below are some random words/thoughts which sums the whole feeling for me.

Dr.Rajkumar.. PD Satish.. Hosabelaku.. maadlebeku… script… dialogues.. punches… climax twist… set…. Pipes, L’s T’s & batte… Rowdy scene... 100% team… fun…. Blue wings.. CBR….

Cheers,
Chandan
